New Delhi: A similar system like that conducting SAT, a standardised aptitude test, for admissions to colleges and universities in the United States is soon to be followed in India as well. Soon, the government-funded Indian universities and colleges will allow admission to a student only when he qualifies in the all-India entrance tests. This admission process will come into action once the draft National Education Policy is approved. Although this scheme is currently thought for the government-run institutes only, the private institutes will also be encouraged to follow this admission process.

Once approved, the common admission tests will be available from 2020. The admission tests will comprise of both aptitude and subject knowledge-based tests.

The system of holding all India based entrance tests was so long seen in terms of the professional courses and other post-graduate courses only. The newly formed National Testing Agency (NTA) is known for conducting the premier professional entrance tests like JEE, NEET, and CMAT. Apart from these tests, the NTA will also conduct another set of admission tests for applicants to more than 170 Delhi University (DU) courses. These tests will also include tests for 12 undergraduate programmes.

The draft policy says, “Admission to all undergraduate programmes of public HEIs [or Higher Education Institutions] will be through a process of assessment through the NTA”.

The initiation of this entrance test process also indicates that perhaps considering Class 12 marks as the criteria for admission to these government-funded institutions will no longer be functioning.

The draft policy further adds, “This will help to eliminate the intensity, stressfulness, and wasted time of the Grade 12 examination season faced by students every year as well as by so many higher educational institutions and employers.”

The educational policy of India thus, on the verge of undergoing some remarkable changes which can well be considered as the transformations for good. The entrance tests conducted for taking admission into the colleges and universities will definitely help the best and eligible students to avail higher studies.
