Assam Mia Parishad And Asomiya (Asom-Mia) Hold Meet At Guwahati Press Club

GUWAHATI: A round table discussion was held on “whether Mission Chalo Paltai-21 can totally vanish if the hindrances of indigenous people’s registration in NRC do not get solved”. Convened by the Khilanjia Adhikar Suraksha Samitee, the discussion was held as per a decision taken on June 30, 2019 by the Assam Mia Parishad, Asomiya (Asom-Mia) at a meeting. In the discussion held on July 16 at Guwahati Press Club, M.G. Hazarika, the president of Asomiya (Asom-Mia) Parishad claimed that the Mia people are rooted to the Kamrup-Kamatapuri tribe. To prove his statement, he said, “More than 70% of the spoken language of the Mia people is same as that Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradeva had used in his poetry while in Koch Bihar”.

As per the preamble read by Hazarika on behalf the conveners, there are instances of hundreds of mistakes in the NRC registration, including names, spelling, titles, and age. As a result many administrative officers, along with indigenous Mia, Koch Rajbangshi, Old Bengali people have also been sent to detention camps, he said. Many speakers at the meeting said that such problems should be solved as soon as possible so that the indigenous people do not have to go through any more uncertainty, failing which the greater Assamese society will break into bits and pieces. They also rued the fact that words like Pomua, Na-Asomiya, Adhibashi, Purbo-Bangamulio, Maimonsingia, Sylheti that are used to mention the Mia people is not a sign of a civilized society. The roundtable discussion was held with an objective to find proper solutions to all these situations.
