MANGALDAI, June 25: The 2018 Assam Scholarship in Honors Research was awarded to Melanie Wallace of Sam Houston State University (SHSU), Huntsville, Texas (USA), for her research project: ‘Prosecutorial Discretion during the Charging Phase’ recently. She conducted the study under the supervision of Professor Travis Franklin who teaches criminal justice at SHSU with research focus on criminal court decision making and offender punishment. Melanie is a senior majoring in criminal justice at SHSU. She began her college education over 20 years ago, studying molecular and cellular biology at the University of Arizona. Since then, she has worked as a marketer and copywriter in the healthcare field. Her goal is to graduate law school and pursue a second career in appellate law.

Last year, this scholarship was awarded to Kayla McCarns. Altogether nine students have won this scholarship since its inception in 2012. Professor of Economics at SHSU, Dr. Hiranya Nath, originally of Mangaldai town, has been awarding another scholarship at the College of Business Administration, SHSU, since 2009. Known as the Assam Scholarship in Monetary Economics, this year’s scholarship was given to Derrick Reiner. The award was presented at a separate ceremony held recently. Derrick recently graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree with major in Economics. He will be working as a Quality Assurance Analyst Associate for Ernst & Young, a multinational professional services firm headquartered in London, England. Derrick is married to Kayla and they have a daughter.
