GUWAHATI: The pipeline of the apartments of the Assam State Housing Board (ASHB) located at Ghoramara in the Bhetapara area in Guwahati has been running dry for the past three years. More so, about 100 of the 320 households staying the apartments, according to sources, are illegal occupants.

Talking to this reporter, a source in the ASHB said: “We’re going to evict all such illegal occupants. We’ve already served them notices. However, this is a time-taking process, needing a year or two.”

On the problem of piped water plant of Pragjyotish Housing Complex at Ghoramara, the source said: “The ground water filtration system of the apartment has not been work. We’ve repaired it, but even now the device is not working. The problem lies in the boring facilities at the complex. There are two boring catering devices there. We’re thinking something long-term to solve the problem. The households are waiting for the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JAICA) water supply project to become a reality. Pragjyotish Housing Complex has 320 flats. The board has not been able to provide potable water to 900 residents for the past three years. To cap it all, the two boring devices have also stopped working. If the motor installed there works, the residents can get water at best 5-10 minutes. Repeated pleas from the households have fallen to the deaf ears of the ASHB. The residents have installed tanks on their own, besides buying water. However, that continues to burn holes in their pockets.”

The residents of the apartment say that erratic water supply is not a new problem for the board. “We’ve to buy water for all sorts of uses like washing clothes, doing dishes and bathing, besides cooking. It’s not possible to bear such expenditures always. This has led us to use the brown water that we get from the motor that is started twice a day,” one of the residents said.
