Guwahati: Renowned Assamese filmmakers Rima Das and Jahnu Barua have been nominated for the Best Director award category in the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) which will be held from today i.e. May 7 to May 12.
Jahnu Barua has been nominated for the film Bhoga Khirikee while Rima Das for Bulbul Can Singh.
The NYIFF which was presented by the Indi-American Arts Council screens features, documentary and short films of India to give a view of Indian life to the people residing in America.
Bhoga Khirikee depicts the story of an educated woman Togor whose calm and peaceful world comes crashing down after her childhood sweetheart Koncheng becomes a militant. The film also portrays Togor's relationship with her parents and she shares a strained relationship with her father and a beautiful one with her mother who loves her unconditionally and supports hers.
On the other hand, Rima Das's Bulbul Can Sing depicts the story of a teenage schoolgirl, Bulbul who grows up in a rural area of Assam.
Bulbul is an exuberant young woman, most happy when she’s hanging out in the fields with her friends Bonny and Suman. The three teenagers while begin to define their own identities, they find themselves increasingly clashing with the age-old rituals set down by the villagers. Bulbul is attracted to a boy for the first time but her mother warned her to be modest and should behave well. Suman is bullied for not conforming to what his peers expect of a young man. For Bonny, the pressures of the community become unbearable.
Recently she was also honoured with ICC NE Excellence Award at North East Business Summit at Hotel Le Meridien in New Delhi conducted by Indian Chamber of Commerce.
She has also won several national and international awards for her film Village Rockstars that has rocked the film industry for depicting the natural scenery of the state of Assam and its uniqueness.
Das also won the Dublin Film Critics Circle Jury Award for Best Director for her film Bulbul Can Sing.
