At least 29 people dead as bus skids off Yamuna Expressway near Delhi, driver dozed off

New Delhi: In a shocking road accident that took place in Yamuna Expressway near Delhi, at least 29 people were killed as the bus they were travelling in skidded off the six-lane Yamuna Expressway. The bus fell 50 feet off into a large drain that also injured seventeen other passengers.

Police, after a primary investigation into the accident, have reached this conclusion that the bus accident took place as the driver of the bus dozed off just a few seconds before the bus fell off. The bus was a government-run bus which was carrying 46 passengers in it. It was heading from Lucknow to Delhi through the six-lane Yamuna Expressway. The accident took place near Agra on Monday morning.

The Yamuna Expressway is 165-km-long that connects Noida with Agra in Uttar Pradesh.

Agra District Magistrate Ravi Kumar, speaking to the reporter, said, "The bus was speeding and the driver may have dozed off."

The bus fells off in a drain of mud as video footage shows rescuers engaged in the rescue operation and pulling out the bodies from the twisted metal parts of the white bus. The roof of the bus had ripped off in the middle due to the severity of the accident. The safety railings too had smashed due to the heavy impact of the accident with the bus finally falling on the black waters of the large drain.

The rescued people, who have met injuries due to the accident, are taken to hospital. Expressing his grief over the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has asked the authorities to give all help to the injured. He has also promised helps to the families of those who are killed in the accident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his grief over the incident in the following words

"Pained by the bus accident in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those injured recover fast. The State Government and local administration are providing all possible assistance to the affected."

Further, the Uttar Pradesh Roadways has announced Rs. 5 lakh compensation for the families of passengers who died in the accident.
