Boko: The South Kamrup district All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) addressed a press meet where they demanded that within 24 hours, police should arrest all the culprits who were involved in the June 7 attack on artistes or the AAMSU would stage protest.

AAMSU South Kamrup district general secretary Nurul Islam alleged that this incident occurred due to the negligence of the police administration. South Kamrup District AAMSU vice-president Sultan Mamud and general secretary Nurul Islam addressed a press meet at Champupara village under Chaygaon constituency on Sunday. Sultan Mamud alleged that vulgar dance programmes were organized every year in this sandbar area under Chayagon and Boko legislative constituencies and AAMSU had many times requested the police to stop such programmes but all their appeals fell on deaf ears.

All Rabha Students’ Union president Ramen Singh Rabha along with Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council executive member Sumit Rabha and general member Arjun Chetry also staged a protest meet along with other cultural organizations. In the meeting, Ramen Singh Rabha warned that if the government did not take immediate action within 24 hours, the government would be responsible for any untoward incident that took place as a consequence. He added that every year such vulgar dance programmes were organized in the riverine area and police never took any action. The organizers of such programmes were destroying the Assamese culture, he said.

State Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that already Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and he himself had spoken to Kamrup Superintendent of Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta and instructed him to book those who had allegedly molested the girls and physically assaulted the cultural troupes.

Meanwhile, Chayagon Police Station officer in-charge Rupam Hazarika has arrested two persons, Subhahan Khan and Sharukh Khan for their involvement in the incident. He also said that he would arrest all those who were involved as soon as possible.

Two cultural troupes - Rainbow dance group of Boko and MK dance group of Sakhati – were allegedly attacked by organizers and a part of the audience for refusing to perform vulgar dance at Asolpara near Jorsimuli Police outpost under Chaygaon police station on the night of June 7.
