Awareness Campaign regarding Mental Health Problems in Mangaldai

MANGALDAI: District Health Society, Darrang has been organizing various types of awareness campaigns in different places of Darrang district under District Mental Health Programme (component of National Mental Health Programme). The camps were conducted by the Psychiatry Department of Mangaldai Civil Hospital under the guidance of National Health Mission, Assam and Director of Health Services, Assam. These camps helped in increasing awareness regarding mental health among the public. Many mental patients were benefited as free treatment and medicines were provided. Awareness meetings were organized in the communities, schools and colleges. People in general and students in particular suffering from different types of mental problems were targeted.

Several NGOs of the district collaborated with the Psychiatry Department of Mangaldai Civil Hospital in conducting the programme successfully. Several street plays were also staged to increase awareness among people regarding mental health problems like drug addiction, depression and suicide. Training programmes for medical officers, nurses, MPWs, Ashas, community health workers and other paramedical staff and teachers are also being conducted. These activities will continue, informed District Programme Officer Dr Munindra Medhi.
