LAKHIMPUR, July 19: Ignoring the scorching heat, activists of the Lakhimpur district unit of Brihattar Asomiya Yuva Mancha (BAYM) staged a protest in the Singara river basin at Nowboicha demanding effective steps to mitigate the flood problem caused by river. The protest was held under the aegis of BAYM Phoolbari-Dolohat Regional unit and the local people to demand eviction of illegal encroachers in the river basin. The illegal encroachment has forced the river to shift its course. The organization further demanded the installation of geobags on the Dolohat-Phoolbari PWD road, acting as the right-hand side embankment of Singara river, from Dolohat Bazaar Railway line to Dolohat Tiniali on NH-15.

Anupam Saikia, the working president of the organization, lambasted Mamun Imdadul Haque Choudhury, the MLA of Nowboicha LAC, for his alleged patronization of the encroachers. The protesters shouted various slogans in support of their demands. They further demanded to evict the commercial institutions covering the area from Dolohat Bazaar Railway line to Kolghar. Regarding the issues, the organization submitted a memorandum to the Lakhimpur district administration demanding immediate action.
