Bindo M Lanong Appointed As Member of District Council of KHADC

SHILLONG: Senior leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Bindo M Lanong, former Speaker in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and former Deputy Chief Minister, has been appointed as a nominated Member of District Council (MDC) by the MDA government in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC). The notification of the appointment was released by District Council Affairs (DCA) Department on June 26.

According to sources, the appointment was made, (Lanong was once the Chief Executive Member of KHADC), because of his vast knowledge in the field and the government hopes that his experience will greatly benefit the council.

It may be mentioned that Lanong has been elected six times as an MDC to the KHADC from Malki- Laitumkhrah constituency since 1972. Lanong was also elected as an MLA twice – once in 1983 and in 2008.

“I was elected as an MDC for six times during those days because many of the votes were indigenous. However, in the MLA election, the voters also included non-tribal’s and I was unable to win the election as I was a candidate from a regional party,” Lanong said while speaking to The Sentinel.

Meanwhile, Deputy CEM of KHADC Pyniaid Sing Syiem, an NPP MDC in the district council, congratulated Lanong for being appointed as a nominated MDC is the council.

“The appointment of Bindo M Lanong as an MDC is a positive move by the State Government as the district council will greatly benefit from his years of experience in the field of politics, especially his views and suggestions,” he said.

He was also of the opinion that with the appointment of Lanong it will further strengthen the Executive Committee (EC) of the KHADC.
