SHILLONG: Congress leader and MLA from East Shillong Constituency Ampareen Lyngdoh has termed the appointment of senior UDP leader Bindo M Lanong by the State government as a nominated MDC in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) as “a demotion” (for the senior UDP politician) stating that she was expecting him “to be candidate for the Rajya Sabha from the government’s side in 2020”.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Lyngdoh said, “There are already seasoned players in the district council. I was expecting Lanong to be one of the players in the Rajya Sabha as a candidate of the MDA government.”

She further said that “Lanong could have played a bigger and a more constructive role in the Rajya Sabha, which should have been a very important agenda for this government. Bindo would have been their ideal candidate for the Rajya Sabha.”

“Bindo is a very seasoned politician,” she said, adding that “there is a need to send an experienced politician to the Rajya Sabha.”

Bindo Lanong was a former Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya and was also the Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly. Since 1972, he has been elected seven times as MDC of the KHADC from the Malki-Laitumkhrah constituency. The UDP leader was also elected as MLA in 1983 and 2008.

Lyngdoh, however, asserted that “Lanong’s appointment is not a threat to the Congress party in the KHADC”.

When asked, she said that the government should have chosen somebody younger to be appointed as a nominated MDC in the KHADC.
