Centre gives Six months extension to NRC updation, complete update by June 30

Guwahati: Adding more relief to the citizens of Assam whose names are not yet included in final draft of the NRC, an extension has been ordered for completing the ongoing process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC). As per the latest directives of the Centre, the last date for the ongoing process is now extended to June 30, 2019.

The Registrar General of India, while announcing the new date of NRC updation, has also mentioned it in a notification that the process of enumerating citizens in the NRC is not possible to be completed within December 31, 2018, as was specified previously by the Supreme Court.

Registrar General of India, Sailesh, stated, "The central government has considered it necessary and expedient in the public interest to complete the said enumeration in connection with the updation of the National Register of Citizens, 1951, by the 30th day of June, 2019."

The notification further states, “Now, therefore, pursuant to the provisions of sub-rule (3) of rule 4A of the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003 and in supersession of the notification number S.O.3715(E), dated the 30th July, 2018, except as respects things done or omitted to be done before such supersession, the Registrar General of Citizen Registration, hereby, notifies that the enumeration in connection with the updation of the National Register of Citizens, 1951, in respect of the State of Assam shall be completed within the period ending on the 30th day of June, 2019."
