GUWAHATI: The Kamrup (Metro) District Administration is gearing up to ascertain a flood free city prior to the rainy season to avoid any mishaps and ensure safety for the commuters.
There are a total of 330 drains under the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), where the cleaning drive under the first phase is already complete and the second phase cleaning drive is under process. The prime channels under this drive include Bharalamukh, Silsako Beel, Deepor Beel, Bahini River, Mora Bharalu and Bondajaan Beel. Under the instructions of the DC, the cleaning drive of the rivers has already started, where along with clearing out the dirt and garbage thrown into the watercourses, water hyacinths and other weeds also should be taken out. The water outlet channels are directed to be kept clean at all times.
These projects are undertaken jointly by GMC and GMDA (Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority). The DC Kamrup (M) Biswajeet Pegu said, "There should be no halt in carrying out the cleanliness drive and the dirt that is usually stacked up after the drains are cleaned out, should not happen this time. They should be cleared away immediately. We are doing our best to avoid any water logging this time."
Even the APDCL (Assam Power Distribution Company Limited) has received notice to ensure that all the electric poles and cables are secured properly to avoid accidents. The Water Resource departments are ordered to keep all the water pumps active and the matter is already under scrutiny.
Moreover, two holes are dug up at both Khanapara and Veterinary College campus, where all the water that flows from Meghalaya will be collected to avoid extreme water logging in the area.
