Construction of 3 New Medical Colleges From January

GUWAHATI: Health & Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said foundation stones for the setting up of three new medical colleges in Kokrajhar, Nalbari and Tinsukia would be laid in the New Year. Sarma told reporters here on Wednesday afternoon that while the foundation stones for Kokrajhar and Nalbari medical colleges would be laid on January 6 & 7 respectively, the similar ceremony would follow for Tinsukia medical college on January 9. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will lay the foundation stones for all three proposed medical colleges.

While Kokrajhar and Tinsukia medical colleges will be constructed and funded by the State Government, Nalbari medical college will be built at the cost of Rs 398 crore from the Centre’s non lapsable pool of funds. The State Government has sanctioned Rs 404 crore and Rs 382 crore for Tinsukia and Kokrajhar medical colleges respectively. Construction of all three new medical colleges will be completed in three years. The tender process to award the contracts of construction has been completed and the work order will be allotted soon.

Sarma said the seat capacity of three new medical colleges will be 100 each. There are six medical colleges in the State and construction of medical colleges in Dhubri, Diphu, Nagaon and Lakhimpur is under way. Once construction of all new medical colleges is completed the MBBS seat capacity in the State will go up to 1426, he said.
