GUWAHATI: In an interesting new development, the century-old Cotton College (now Cotton University) has witnessed a huge rush of students to study History as a major subject in undergraduate and postgraduate classes.
History has remained in the second top of the cut-off tally with 96 percent in the admission into the B.A. courses with major courses in Cotton University. Political science remained in the top of the cut-off tally with 96.33 percent. The admission concluded on Saturday.
“High cutoff marks in the History major course in BA at Cotton University is a significant development. History was considered as the dead subject by many students in the recent years. Students who have scored high marks in the Class XII board exams, are enthusiastic and determined to appear in civil service examinations and clear the same. Knowledge on History is very much essential in the civil service examinations,” a senior faculty at Cotton University said.
He said the younger generation is interested in becoming civil servants following increasing number of success stories of Assam’s students in UPSC exams.
In the recent years, Political Science and English used to be at the top of the cut-off tally in Cotton University.
“Besides civil service examinations, a section of young students affected by the current socio-political-economic scenario of the State as well India, have shown interest to study History,” another teacher at Cotton University said.
