MANGALDAI, Sept 22: Darrang Police, following the directives of the Supreme Court in connection with the alarmingly increasing incidents of moral policing and mob lynching, has taken up measures to take stern action as per the provisions of the law.

In view of the recent directives of the apex court to the State Governments to appoint one nodal police officer in each district, the district police have formed a committee with all Officers in-charge of the police stations of the district as members and the Superintendent of Police as the District Nodal Officer. The Officer in-charge concerned is bound to register such cases while the nodal officer himself will supervise the investigation. While initiating serious action in such cases, police from now onwards will follow section 153 (a) of the IPC instead of the section under the IT act against persons spreading any kind of media leading to instigate mob violence.

Addressing media persons of the district in a press meet, Darrang Superintendent of Police Sreejith Thiraviam explained how the apex court, in its verdict in response to a writ petition filed by one Tehseen S. Poonawalia, had directed the government to follow three steps measures - preventive, remedial and punitive - to curb such incidents in future. He also appealed to the media to be very careful in preparing reports of such incidents and also to sensitize people not to spread any fake images or videos on social media that might instigate others as that would invite strong legal action against the person making the false news viral. Additional Superintendent of Police, Satyajit Nath, Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ), Amit Hojai and DIPRO Mani Mala Gogoi also attended the press meet.
