DIGBOI, May 1: In a tragic road mishap that occurred on Monday late evening on NH-38 at Bogapani area under Digboi Police Station, a UB Constable (605), Daya Ravi Das (44) attached to Digboi Police Station died on duty after he was hit by a recklessly-driven dumper. Das, who was serving under Assam Police for around 19 years, was a resident of Nokari village at Tengakhat in Dibrugarh district. According to police sources, the deceased was returning to the police station after performing his document process duty in Tingrai area when the erring dumper bearing registration number AS 23 AC 7312, coming from the opposite direction, hit Das who was on a motorcycle (ASO6 C 4391), thus inflicting serious head injury.
He was immediately rushed to Digboi CHC for preliminary treatment and then immediately shifted to a Dibrugarh-based private nursing home where the doctor declared him brought dead. The erring driver of the dumper, Dilip Tanti (21) of Muliabari Digboi was arrested while vehicle that belonged to Gopal Biswas of Kalibari area in Digboi was taken under police custody. The body of the deceased was brought to his Digboi temporary residence on Tuesday afternoon after post-mortem. He is survived by his son Gyanjyoti Das (16) and wife Dipanjali Das. “The immature demise of Das has been widely mourned and has created a vacuum among the departmental colleagues and his well-wishers,” said Mahesh Chandra Borah, the Inspector of Digboi Police Station.
