Dowry cases nil but theft, robbery on the rise in Jorhat

JORHAT: Dowry cases have come to nil but theft, robbery, murder, extortion, and rape have been on the rise in Jorhat district over the past three years, said Hemen Das, officer-in-charge of Jorhat Sadar Police station on Wednesday. According to police sources, dowry cases between 2016 to 2018 is nil followed by 75 robbery cases, 1,301 theft cases, 37 rape cases, 46 murders and 94 extortion cases that took place between the year 2016-2018.

Moreover, recently a Village Defence Party (VDP) flying squad was formed under Jorhat Police Station with five members. The squad will reach the spot following call during any untoward emergencies, especially during the festivities. The squad will be monitored by in-charge of Jorhat Sadar Police Station and CO of the Village Defence Party. Robbery and theft cases are expected to go down now, said a security official.
