LAKHIMPUR: Heralding a new horizon in the academic arena of not just North Assam but of the State as a whole, Madhavdev University of Narayanpur in Lakhimpur district, newly-appointed Vice-Chancellor of the university, Dr Dibakar Chandra Deka assumed office on Monday. A special programme was organized in the university auditorium on the occasion. Prior to it, various organizations of Lakhimpur gave the scholar of repute a warm welcome at Lilabari airport as soon as he arrived in the district to take charge. In the programme, which was held in the presence of eminent persons, the newly-appointed Registrar of the university, Dr Sarat Hazarika delivered the welcome speech. The new Vice-Chancellor was given a warm felicitation by the university fraternity along with Bihpuriya MLA Debananda Hazarika.

After taking charge, Vice-Chancellor Dr Dibakar Chandra Deka said that he would try to create work culture among the upcoming generations by disseminating the very essence of education. “The strong pillar of success in the field of education can only be installed when the inherited merit of the students is enhanced and a punctual and disciplinarian mentality is shaped among them. With such plans and attempts, I will strive to give the university a universal status,” he said.

Former Education Minister Premadhar Borah and MLA Debananda Hazarika also spoke in the programme. The State Government recently elevated Madhavdev College, founded in 1964, to Madhavdev University by appointing Dr Dibakar Chandra Deka as the first Vice-Chancellor of the university, thereby fulfilling a long-pending public demand. Professor Deka was the Head of the Department of Chemistry of Gauhati University. He did M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry in 1983 from Gauhati University, M.Tech in High Pressure Technology and Catalysis from IIT Khargapur, Ph.D. in Organic Reaction under Pressure from IIT Khargapur, Diploma in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from Tokyo Institute of Technology and D.Sc. in Organic Synthetics from Gauhati University.
