GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has decided to engage school and college students to keep the city clean and hygiene.
The corporation has started picking up two students from each schools and colleges to create awareness about cleanliness and hygiene in their respective localities. The move is part of “I Love Guwahati” campaign currently under way to create awareness about the need to inculcate the habit of cleanliness among city residents, traders, corporate houses, government offices and other stakeholders of the city. “I love Guwahati” campaign is part of the Centre’s Swachh Survekshan 2019 aimed urban sanitation.
Swachh Survekshan 2019, an exercise being conducted by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, will rank cities of India in terms of their cleanliness. The results of the exercise will be announced in the first week of January, 2019.
“We have already visited five leading schools in the city. Our officials are in touch with different city colleges. We are expecting at least two volunteers from each institution. These volunteers to be known as Swachh Yodha will create awareness about cleanliness in their localities, families and friends. If schools and colleges cooperate, the initiative will yield positive results in keeping the city clean and hygiene,” a GMC official told The Sentinel.
