Shillong: Home Minister, James K Sangma on Sunday said that if a person found to be involved in any kind of crime it is there is no question of being biased and the guilty will be brought to book.

Sangma was referring to allegation of a National People’s party (NPP) leader from East Jaintia Hills, Nidamon Chullet of being involved in the attack on women rights and RTI activist Agnes Kharshiing and her colleague Amita Sangma.

“It is not a question to which party he belongs to if he is from the Congress party justice will be served if he is from the NPP justice will be served,” the Home Minister said.

Sangma also said that it is not a matter of which party he belongs to even as he added that it is about the law taking its own course. On the Congress’ claim that there is a political nexus in the attack on the two women, the Home Minister said that the opposition is entitled to its opinions but an individual may be member of the party but Sangma said that if a party member is involved it does not necessarily mean that there is a political angle.

“If there is any workers or supporters of the Congress party does that mean there is a political angle that Congress is behind this. It is immature to say that. Let us not look at what political affiliation the person has. If a person has done something wrong then the law must take its own course and if the investigation proves beyond reasonable doubt that he is very much there then justice will have to be served,” the Home Minister said.

When asked that Amita had mentioned the name NPP leader from East Jaintia Hills Nidamon Chullet, Sangma said that everything that is mentioned the police has to go through process evn as he added that the government understands her concerns but proper procedure has to be followed.

According to Sangma there has to be an investigation and that none can be arbitrarily arrest.

On the suggestions of DD Lapang for an independent inquiry on the matter, the Home Minister said that various senior leaders of the party had made various suggestions and the NPP was examining and considering about them.

“Whether there is a need for having an independent enquiry will also be based on whether the police is doing its job or not. As of now it is doing its investigation let us give them time if police is doing its part let the whole process be completed,” Sangma said.
