Shillong: The consensus arrived at by the various political representatives has made the High Power Committee (HPC) to expediently process all the formalities related to the construction of the new legislative Assembly complex at Mawdiangdiang in the new Shillong township.

“There is no second thought on the construction of the State Assembly building which was kept hanging for the last 18 years,” stated Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Donkupar Roy in a recent interview with The Sentinel. He said that the long years of delay cropped up due to differences in identifying the site.

At least four sites were identified in course of these 18 years but someone or the other have always differed in their views over the location of the building.

Since the massive inferno gutted the old heritage complex in 2001, the Assembly sessions were carried out on two sites. First it was the State Central Library Hall and presently sessions are continuing at the Arts and Culture Auditorium.

Asserting that the decision on the site is final, the Speaker also said the progress of the works pertaining to all aspects is going at a very fast pace. It may be mentioned that the Speaker last week said that he hoped that the state-of-art Assembly complex will come up by 2022.
