HPC Paper Mills workers call Barak Bandh today in Silchar

Silchar: HPC Paper Mills Revival Action Committee (HPCPMRAC) is all set for a 12-hour Barak Bandh on Thursday. Addressing the mediapersons at a press-meet held here on Tuesday evening, Manabendra Chakraborty, chief convener of the Committee said both the Centre and the State have assured that the two paper mills of Assam would be revived at the earliest.

Since then much water has flowed through Brahmaputra and Barak valleys, but in reality nothing concrete has happened. He said that it has now become clear that the government is not at all sincere and does not even want to revive the two mills.

Manabendra Chakraborty also put forth the miserable plight of the employees of the mill who are leading their lives in utmost distress and misery. He said that the Committee is left with no other alternative or option but to convene a bandh. It is in this backdrop that the Committee has called for Barak bandh in demand of revival of the paper mills at Nagaon and Panchgram on November 22. He also urged upon all sections of people to make this bandh a success one.

Others who addressed the mediapersons also lamented on the matter that just for an amount of Rs.90 lakh, the employees of the mill were thrown into the mouth of hell. They further said that during ‘Namami Barak’, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal assured that the problem of paper mill was his own problem and he would take immediate action so that the mill is revived. Since then, one year has elapsed, but the Chief Minister till now has not taken any step and has rather broken his promise.

The Committee also informed that on the day of the bandh, rallies would be taken out in various places of the valley, such as, Silchar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Kalain, Badarpur, Panchgram, Gumra Bazar etc. The 12-hour bandh has received support from the Congress, Jamiat, SUCI, CTVOA and a host of other organizations. Among others present at the press-meet included Kishore Bhattacharjee, Sarif Uzz Zaman Laskar, Samiran Acharjee and Baharul Islam Barbhuiya. A rally was taken out today at 3.30 pm which started from the point near the statue of Khudiram Bose at Club road of this town. The rally converged near the statue of Chittaranjan Das which is at National Highway point. Senior citizens, leading citizens, women, family members of the employees of Cachar Paper Mill participated in the rally. They urged upon the people of this town to support the bandh and make it a successful one.
