Interactive session held by Save the Children (international NGO), SEWA and Dibrugarh University

Dibrugarh: An interactive session on certain issues faced by the marginalised children of the region was held under the joint collaboration of Save the Children (international NGO), SEWA and Dibrugarh University on Friday in the premises of Dibrugarh University. Speaking at the meet, CEO of Save the Children, India, Bidisha Pillai spoke at length about certain issues inflicting the less fortunate children.

Giving a synopsis of the experience of the visits her team made to certain tea gardens and other rural areas during the past couple of days, she highlighted the most important concerns facing the children there. Pillai observed that the parents of such children as well as the community as such were aware of the vices or unlawfulness of certain practices like early marriage and child labour, but, in the absence of better options, were forced by circumstances to pursue the same.

She prescribed reinforcing the education system in such areas as a counter measure. That being said, Pillai also held that certain children of Dhemaji district had made considerable progress in certain areas like disaster drills. Professor of Department of Commerce, Dr. Ajanta Borgohain Rajkonwar opined that the effectiveness of the programmes undertaken by the organisation to improve the lives of the children should be measurable, and their results be shared with the stakeholders.
