International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed

TINSUKIA: The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed at Tinsukia College on Wednesday. Organized by Tinsukia District Police, the event witnessed a lively question-answer visual competition among the students on the topic related to drug abuse which carried both awareness and ill effect of drug addiction. The prizes were distributed to the student who secured the highest point.

Asif Ahmed, Additional SP (HQ) dwelt at length on the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 and urged upon the students not to get into the trap of drug traffickers. The programme, moderated by DSP Bitul Chetia, was addressed by Dr Mridul Gogoi of GNB Civil Hospital, Rana Changmai, Principal of Tinsukia College and Dr Rishi Das, among others.

Goalpara: With a view to observe the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Anti-Drug Prohibition Council of Goalpara district arranged a one-day awareness programme at the Goalpara Girls’ College on Wednesday. Presided over by Rina Das, Principal in-charge, the meeting thoroughly discussed the danger of being addicted to drugs like cocaine, heroin and brown sugar, and alcohol.

Nani Das, in-charge president, and Sailen Das, honorary secretary of the committee, emphasized a drug-free world where the students as well as new generation youths could take a fresh breath devoid of contraband. Rina Das, in her speech, thanked the committee for choosing Goalpara Girls’ College as the venue as women had a stronger part to play in checking the use of prohibited drugs in the society.

On the other hand, Diganta Baruah, excise inspector, Paresh Sarma, assistant deputy director of civic defence, college teachers Ali Hussain Choudhury, Rita Adhikary and Sofikul Ahmed focused on the different other aspects of the anti-drug scenario in the State. Jesmin Sultana with her women empowerment song and Monjur Alom with Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s popular song Manuhe Manuhor Babe enthralled the audience.

KOKRAJHAR: Along with the rest of the world, the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was held at Kokrajhar Government College on Wednesday. The day was organized by District Legal Services Authority, Kokrajhar in collaboration with Kokrajhar district administration and district police department. Addressing the students, the secretary of District Legal Services Authority, Kokrajhar, Bidyut Medhi said people, particularly the youths, should stay away from using drugs and illicit liquor as these were the prime causes of all health-related problems. He also called upon all to stay away from drugs and alcohol and stay fit.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Rosy Rani Sharma said students should be aware of their bright future and career. She called upon the students to concentrate on their studies and to stay away from using drugs and alcohol. The programme was also attended by the Principal of Kokrajhar Government College, Dr. Banabina Brahma and DIPRO, Kokrajhar, Tridip Nandan Bora.

SARUPATHAR: The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed at Sarupathar by the police administration and Sarupathar College of Dhansiri sub-division in Golaghat district to create awareness about the perils of drug abuse among people. Sarupathar Police and Sarupathar College jointly took out a massive rally with college students on Wednesday.

“We are involving some rehabilitated persons who have overcome the ill-effects of drugs to make the event more effective as their experience sharing can motivate youths towards a healthy, drug-free life. The use of drugs affects our brain and nervous system and triggers the feeling of intense pleasure. It not only puts our health in danger but also causes financial, emotional and other behavioural problems. It also makes us lose self-control and can lead to damaging behaviour,” said Pranjal Borah, the subdivisional officer (SDPO) of Dhansiri subdivision.

“The theme ‘Listen First’ is an initiative to increase support for the prevention of drug use that is based on science and is thus an effective investment in the well-being of children and youth, their families and their communities. Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe,” said the Principal of Sarupathar College.
