National Highways Service Lanes Need Urgent Maintenance By NHAI

GUWAHATI: Large deep puddles at times resembling small ponds are characteristic features of the service lanes on both sides of the Guwahati four-lane bypass from Jalukbari to Khanapara. Mention may be made of the area at Beharbari. At some stretches, there is no trace of the service lanes as such. This is despite the fact that these service lanes of the National Highways should be maintained by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

However, the poor state of these service lanes indicates the lack of responsibility of the autonomous agency of the Government of India.

Reflecting on this woeful state of the vital part of the National Highway, Dwijen Kalita — a local person — said, “The lanes assume pond-like structures during the rainy days or in monsoon season; and during summer and windy days the overwhelming dust make them impossible for movement of man and vehicles. Since the Central government is stressing on road connectivity and improved National Highways, the NHAI should initiate action at the earliest.”
