Tale of 60 gold bars
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI: The veracity of the allegation – snatching of 60 gold bars by an SI, a havildar and a home guard of Dispur Police Station from a ‘gang’ from Manipur and keeping the matter a secret – has been unfolded with the action taken by the Guwahati East DCP against the police personnel.
The DCP has suspended SI Nipu Kalita and havildar Faizur Rahman in connection with the case. The question of suspending home guard Afzal Ali, a casual employee, does not arise as he has been relieved in January.
According to police sources, while SI Nipu Kalita, hailing from Tezpur, has not been attending office since February 1, havildar Faizur Rahma, hailing from Barpeta, is in the police dragnet. He is being grilled. Home guard Afzal Ali, hailing from Kamrup, has also been absconding.
The FIR lodged recently in Dispur Police Station by a person from Manipur has punched holes in the entire episode which the three police personnel were trying to keep under the wraps. According to FIR, the three policemen caught the group from Manipur at Nongpoh on their way to Shillong and set them free while bringing them back to Guwahati, but not before snatching 60 gold bars from them. The market value of the gold, according to the FIR, is around Rs 4 crore. According to sources, the police team was on the trail of the ‘smugglers’ from Jorabat on January 15.
