‘Political entities involved in Rights violation’: Meghalaya Governor Tathagatha Roy

Shillong: Meghalaya Governor Tathagatha Roy out rightly stated that political entities and formations are involved in human rights violation. Speaking at the International day of Human rights in Shillong on Monday, the Meghalaya governor, known for his vexed official narratives took cue from the statement of statement of the member of the Meghalaya Human Right commission on the issue of ‘dabbling on issue of political entities’.

Political entities and political formation who does not believe in our kind of our democracy used innovative methods to use the police proactive action and in-action which led to human right violation too come into power. “It’s not because of the police action and inaction but the way the police have been used the political party in an appalling manner”, Roy stated while referring to a case in Tripura where a girl has been threatened by the cops to file a rape case against her own father.

He wnet on saying that there is a serious dilemma in the police set up on issues related to Human rights violation when the political groups comes into play. Aknowledging that the police have to play a balancing act especially in the North eastern states , Roy said, “ The police will have to be more accountable in the scheme of things where there is another flip side of the coin”.

In regards to the violation of human rights in the North Eastern region the Governor referred to the long international boundary of the region which poses a challenge to the enforcement authorities who have to strike a balance between the unity and integrity of the country while keeping in mind that the human rights of the people are not violated. He also said that human rights violations in the neighbouring countries have repercussions on the country.

The Governor urged the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) to scale up its activities on various issues concerning human rights violations. During his address he also paid tribute to the lesser known champions of human rights and made a call to address human right violations through mandated mechanisms.

In the Concluding Remarks, Dr Justice Aftab Hussian Saikia, Chairperson, MHRC, said human rights are being violated everyday as people no longer fear or respect law. He added that the soul of human rights is in the Fundamental Rights which is in our constitution and Article 21 of the Indian Constitution that provides ‘that no person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty except according to the procedure established by law’ is the torch bearer of human rights.

Earlier, Member, Meghalaya Human Rights Commission, P J P Hanaman while delivering the Welcome Address gave an overview of MHRC and spelt out its salient features.

R Chandranathan, Director General of Police, Meghalaya spoke on The Role of Police in addressing Human Rights violations, B Bhattacharjee, Additional Advocate General of Meghalaya added by referring to the judiciary.
