Rains Cause Landslips in East Khasi Hills District, Shillong

SHILLONG: The incessant rain in the State for the last few days, especially East Khasi Hills district, has caused landslips and an incident of tree being uprooted. On Tuesday, there was an incident of landslip in Malki locality of the city. The incident occurred near Basic School, Nongshiliang. Fortunately, there were no casualties.

As soon as information was received, the authorities of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), immediately sent a team to the incident site. Also personnel of the MeECL, PWD (Roads) and the police rushed to the spot.

The East Khasi Hills, DDMA also informed that there were landslips in Mawiong and Mawlynngad village under Mawryngkneng Block. There was also an incident of a tree being uprooted at Mawiong. Personnel from the District Forest Office were dispatched to the incident site. Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills, Deputy Commissioner, Matsiewdor War Nongbri informed that assessment of the damage in terms of monetary value cannot be done immediately.

“We have a team, who will go and do the assessment. If it is in the rural areas it will be assessed by the BDOs and the gram sevaks. That takes a little bit of time,” Nongbri said. The Deputy Commissioner also said that as soon as the DDMA received the information they immediately dispatched their personnel to the site of the incidents.
