GUWAHATI: Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia said that the Oppositions’ unity and their excellent floor coordination in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday have made the Centre not to introduce the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. Had the Bill been introduced and put to vote, it would have been defeated through voting, he said.

Talking to newsmen at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on Wednesday, Saikia thanked the AASU (All Assam Students’ Union), NESO (North East Students’ Organization), AJYCP (Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chantra Parishad), other organizations and intellectuals for opposing the controversial Bill. “The unity against the Bill shown by them has made the Centre backtrack on the Bill at the last moment. It’s the triumph of the might of the masses,” Debabrata Saikia said.

Debabrata Saikia also thanked AICC president Rahul Gandhi for his role against the Bill. “Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke in favour of the Bill at two recent rallies in Assam. The Bill has united the Northeast against it,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati was jubilant on Wednesday for the failure of the Centre to introduce the Bill.
