Rohingya issue: Government to deport 23 more Rohingya from Assam

Assam is taking steps to fix the Rohingya issue and in a latest development in consultation with the ministry of home affairs, the state government has started process to deport at least 23 more Rohingya Muslims. The Rohingyas are currently staying in Silchar, Goalpara and Tezpur detention camps in Assam.

Previously Assam had deported seven Rohingya Muslims.

Sources pointed out that the Assam police has already finished the verification process about the nationality of these immigrants. Sources also said that these immigrants have also agreed and given consent for their deportation back to their country. The Myanmar government has besides agreed to take them back and also ensured their safety, security.

Security sources notified that in deliberation with ministry of home and external affairs, Myanmarese authorities have completed the verification of their home addresses.

Sources, “We are in touch with the nodal agency in the neighboring country and the deportation will take place in a phased manner.”

Sources also admitted that they are yet to fix up the date for their deportation.

In the meantime, the Border Security forces in Assam and other frontier states have been kept on vigil after an intelligence input indicating migration of a large number of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar to Northeastern states about two weeks back.

Security sources indicated that even the railways were alerted to keep alert on possible movement of Rohingya from the region to other parts of the country.

As per an estimate, around 40,000 Rohingya are now residing illegally in India and majority of them are staying in places like Hyderabad, Jammu, Kanpur and outskirts of Delhi. Most of them came years ago and the Government of India is yet to take a decision on their future deportation.
