Saraswati Puja Goes Thematic Against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

GUWAHATI: Old traditions die hard. This seems to be true for former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Significantly, the students of Cotton University in Guwahati took their protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 as the theme of the Saraswati Puja.

As the Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi had been in the habit of visiting B Barooah College and Handique Girls’ College of Guwahati on the day of Saraswati Puja. Even as he is no longer the Chief Minister of the State, yet he took the pain to visit to the two colleges of the city and joined students and faculties to celebrate Sarswati Puja on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the students of Cotton University observed the day with symbolic opposition to the much-debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The theme of Saraswati Puja at the university was ‘Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016’. A map of the Northeast was displayed in the middle of the University premises with “WE OPPOSE CITIZENSHIP AMENDMENT BILL 2016” written on it. The students of the university also expressed their shock at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent comment on CAB and his stand on passing the Bill in the Rajya Sabha.

Students of almost all educational institutes in the State, including Guwahati, celebrated Saraswati Puja by offering prayers and floral tribute (pushpanjali) and on Sunday.
