Semir on safety of factory workers held

SILCHAR, January 9: “Industry workers should be aware of taking safety measures to protect themselves from various ailments.” This was the message which was dissemited to the workers of various factories during a daylong semir on the topic ‘Innovative ideas on OHS awareness in paper and other industries’ held here at Rajib Bhawan recently. The semir was organised by the Directorate General Factory Advice Service and Labour Institutes in cooperation with State government’s Inspectorate of Factories.

 Cachar additiol deputy commissioner AR Shiekh iugurated the semir by lighting the iugural lamp. Among others present at the iugural ceremony included executive officer of BVCL Mukesh Agarwal and the director of DM Group of Companies Kamalesh Singh.

Addressing the gathering at the semir, the chief inspector of factories C Purkayastha said that a host of rules and guidelines are there for the safety and security of the workers of factories. He added that implantation of these rules and guidelines are not sufficient. Awareness should be created among the factory workers so that they could realize the need of following a set of rules while working in a factory.

Purkayastha said that along with health safety, the workers also should take care of their physical safety. He added that though it is not possible to end the accident at workplaces, but with awareness the numbers of accidents could be reduced. He expressed his happiness over the large turn–out of students besides representatives of magement, workers, trade union leaders, among others. He said, “More importantly each of you who are here should enlighten at least ten others who could not come here’’.

The additiol chief inspector of factories S Samiran Das said that safety measures for workers, enforcement of safety standards as per laws, modernisation of production facilities, and use of safety gadgets can ensure industrial safety and health of workers.

Among others spoke at the semir included director of RLI of Kolkata U K Das, additiol chief inspector of factories S Das, the medical officer of Cachar Paper Mill Dr Chinmoy Chakraborty, and senior mager of Borkhola Bottling Plant L K Doloi. The inspector of factories MM Borah delivered welcome address.
