JOYSAGAR: Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha has been taking initiative to preserve and protect various historical sites of Sivasagar district. The DC called departmental meetings of the Sivasagar Archeological and Tourism department as well as of the Sivasagar PWD officials on Wednesday.

The Sivasagar PWD officials informed that the historic Demow Pukhuri and the historic Demow Jan were safe and these historic sites were left out while preparing the map for construction of the Upper Assam four-lane highway two years ago. Besides, the historic Thowra Shiva Dol which was constructed by Swargadew Shiva Singha during the Ahom rule near NH-37 of Rajabari, Sivasagar, was also left out from the proposed NH-37 four-lane highway map.

The Demow Regional Asomiya Yuba Mancha submitted a memorandum to the Sivasagar DC asking him to preserve the historical sites in Demow and thereby, the DC took account of the steps being taken for the preservation of these sites in yesterday’s meeting.

Meanwhile, the authorities of the Sivasagar Archeological Department also revealed that the Namdang Sila Saku situated in NH-37 near Gaurisagar Namdang area over the Namdang River was left out from the map prepared for the construction of the four-lane NH-37 in Sivasagar district and therefore another mini link road would be constructed by the PWD Department to preserve the historic Sila Saku of Namdang River.

Jha ordered the Sivasagar Forest Department (Social Forestry) to take initiative to plant saplings in the Sivasagar NH-37 area as hundreds of full-grown trees had to cut to continue the construction works of the Sivasagar NH-37 four-lane project.
