Guwahati: Making a historic and one-of-a-kind announcement on Sunday, Indian Union Minister Smriti Irani has stated that from now on there will be apparels fitting the body sizes as per the Indian standards. She said that the Indian textiles and garments industry is soon to have its own country-specific apparel size.

The union minister made the announcements while addressing the ‘Textile Conclave’ at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. She also added that a study has been carried out in order to find the right sizes of the Indian people’s body structure which at times differs from the body structure of the foreign country people. It is only after the study finishes, the ‘Size India’ project for apparel measurement will be introduced.

Irani said, “In the apparel export segment, one of the biggest challenges is that the UK has its size, the US has its size, and Europe has its size of measurement. But, India does not have it (size of apparels, such as 42, 44 and XL).”

She also added, “I hereby present the central government’s resolve that ‘Size India’ project will soon be rolled out for the entire country, the first-of-its-kind project in the Indian history.”

Further speaking more on the textile industry and the central government’s encouraging approach towards the upliftment of this sector, Irani added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has allotted over Rs 1,800 crore in the span of last 4.5 years in order to upgrade the textile sector of Gujarat. Putting further right on the matter, she said that it is after this allocation, the textile industry of Gujarat another huge investment of Rs 30,000 crore and this got to happen only because of the initiation of PM Modi.

Stressing on the need for meeting the domestic demand of textiles, she said, “Our country has a capacity to cater to huge demands, both domestic and overseas. But, never before in the history of our country was a study done to ascertain the strength and the magnitude of our domestic market.” So, she said that to meet the domestic demands of apparels, a study will be conducted.
