Guwahati: United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi launched a stinging attack on the Narendra Modi government and accused of being dismissive towards its political and ideological opponents and said that there must be weight in what a government says.

Gandhi, while addressing the People's Agenda Jan Sarokar 2019 in New Delhi said that the Modi government has destroyed the institutions during the past five years.

She further stated that the soul of the nation is being trampled for the past sometime through a well-planned conspiracy which is a matter of great concern. "Regressive forces have systematically dismantled our institutions and the present government has undermined the welfare of the architecture that was laid down over the last 65 years," Gandhi added.

Hitting out at the BJP, Gandhi alleged that the party doesn't respect the diversity of India. "We have been taught the new definition of patriotism today and those rejecting diversity are being labelled as patriots. Discrimination among our own citizen is being justified based on caste, religion and ideology," she said.

Gandhi also veiled reference to controversies involving alleged consumption of beef and the BJP's strong opposition to it adding that we should accept the whims of a few people in the matters of food, dresses and freedom of speech. She said that the present government is not ready to respect disagreement at all.

Criticizing the BJP government, she also said that if people ate assaulted for staying true to their belief, this government turns blind eye to them and it refuses to implement the rule of law which is its basic duty.
