SUCI urges to postpone NRC update

GUWAHATI, June 30: The Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), Assam State Committee, has urged the State Government to postpone the NRC updating exercise till the issue of ‘D’ voters was resolved.

“There is no need for any haste in such an important issue like the NRC updating exercise. Let the State Government first settle the matter of ‘D’ voters. A number of Indian citizens have wrongly and forcibly been branded as ‘D’ voters since 1997,” it said in a statement.

The SUCI also called for not confining the settlement of citizenship status of an individual just to 16 documents. “Determition of citizenship should be extended beyond the 16 documents and the process should include any authentic document besides circumstantial evidence and interview of neighbours,” it added.
