LAKHIMPUR, Sept 25: The Ghagar Parghat of Subansiri River in Lakhimpur district, being run by the Inland Water Transport Department (IWTD), is operating in complete anarchy and extreme unsafe conditions.
The department has taken no effective steps to improve the condition of the Parghat till date. Against such unsafe conditions of the Parghat, the Lakhimpur district unit of Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) came down heavily on the Lakhimpur district administration as well as the State Government and initiated an agitation programme at Ghagar Parghat on Tuesday. Staging a two-hour long sit-in on Tuesday, the activists of the organization demanded to allot ferries with developed machines and to make the attendance of the IWTD employees compulsory at the Parghat.
Further, the organization demanded to display the lists of the fare charges fixed by the department at the Parghat on both banks of the river and to draw the fare against due tickets as per the list, to ban the selling of tender of the Parghat to another lessees by the actual lesse at a high rate, to enhance the communication system by repairing the deplorable roads leading to the Parghat, to stop inviting tender of high rate, to develop the infrastructure of the Parghat by constructing waiting sheds and toilets for the passengers, to deploy ambulance ferry services and to manage life jackets for the passengers.
