Three-day workshop on Manual Therapy underway at USTM

GUWAHATI, Sept 19: A three-day national workshop on ‘Manual Therapy for Peripheral Joints and Temperomandibular Joint Dysfunction’ was inaugurated on Wednesday at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) premises. The workshop has been organized by the Department of Physiotherapy, USTM in association with Indian Council of Medical Research, (ICMR), Department of Health Research under Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, New Delhi and MTFI, Mangalore.

While inaugurating the workshop, internationally acclaimed manual therapy teacher Prof Umasankar Mohanty, who is also the President of Manual Therapy Foundation of India (MTFI) said, “Manual physical therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy delivered with the hands as opposed to a device or machine. In manual therapy, practitioners use their hands to put pressure on muscle tissue and manipulate joints in an attempt to decrease back pain caused by muscle spasm, muscle tension, and joint dysfunction.”

Notably, Prof Mohanty has trained 12,956 physiotherapists across the globe.

This hands-on workshop has targeted both physiotherapy students and clinicians and will discuss all new trends for the identification and management of peripheral joints and temperomandibular joint dysfunctions. The work presented at this course will be an integration of concepts advocated by James Cyriax, G.D Maitland, Kaltenborn, Mennell, Edwards, Lee, Jull and Richardsonand Mohanty.

Special emphasis will be given on Clinical Reasoning and Evidence Based Practice. Clinician and students of physiotherapy from different universities of the north east region, along with USTM students have been participating in the workshop, a release said.
