TINSUKIA: Keeping all speculations and apprehension at rest, the Tinsukia Railway Division of NFR has finally decided not to transport any elephant by train as speculated earlier in the wake of objections raised by many quarters, including PIL and instant writ petition filed before the Gauhati High Court.
Talking to The Sentinel on Saturday, the Senior Railway Commercial Manager of Tinsukia Railway Division RN Rangmanch said the Division, after going through all angles, decided not to transport any elephant by train as per a verdict of the Supreme Court which prohibited movement of elephant.
Though this decision by the Railway might bring temporary respite to environmentalist groups, the State Forest Department might explore other means for transportation as forest officials in collusion with elephant owners and elephant smugglers had allegedly accomplished the deal, according to a source. It is to be seen how the court implicates the forest officials in particular. (IANS)
