Two Rohingyas Detained at Akhaura with Bangladeshi Passports

* ‘Big racket is active to smuggle refugees from Myanmar’

Agartala: Detention of two Rohingya refugees in the immigration counter of Bangladesh at Akhaura checkpost has raised many eyebrows as it is suspected that a ‘big racket is active’ in the area to smuggle the refugees from Myanmar to different parts of India and many other countries.

Illegal movement of Rohingyas has been a regular feature in this region but the this case has caused serious concern as the two detained persons – Kamal Hussain (23) and Sabbir Molla (25) – were bearing valid Bangladesh passports and visas and was trying to enter India through the official way.

They reported into the exit desk of immigration at Akhaura checkpost in the Bangladesh side but the immigration officials got suspicious seeing their movement and started interrogating them.

At a point, both broke down and admitted that they are Rohingya refugees and fled from the Refugee Camp No. 19 of Ukhia Bankhani of Cox Bazar. They also admitted that they have procured the passport from Rajbari district of Bangladesh and then the visas from the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.

Rasul Ahamed, officer-in-charge of Akhaura police station admitted to local reporters that the immigration officials handed over the two suspected Rohingyas to the police station and the matter is being investigated.
