GUWAHATI: The Latasil police arrested six persons till Tuesday, including a woman identified as Rohit Bhaspar, Raju Bhaspar, Babu Bhaspar, Honey Singh, Timnku Ali and Farida Begum in connection with the Ugratara Dewalaya robbery case.
According to a police source, four accused – Rohit Bhaspar, Raju Bhaspar, Babu Bhaspar and Honey Singh, confessed to the police that they carried the stolen articles, including the main idol wrapping in a gunny bag on November 17 from Ugratara Devalaya and handed over to another accused Tinku Ali who works at a scrap dealer located at Sabipul under Bharalumukh police station. The four accused negotiated and confirmed a deal for selling the articles with Tincku Ali at Rs 7000. Accordingly, Tinku finally received and kept the bag containing the article in a corner of the dealer.
After the deal, the four accused left for amusement at a Mela being organized at Gausala near Maligaon. And they were supposed to collect the amount on their return. However, later the four accused could come to know that someone has lifted the bag. So, it was not there anymore. On the other hand, owner of the scrap dealer Farida Begum confessed that she did not notice the bag at all.
Meanwhile, the Latasil police has conducted search operation at the scrap dealer for several times. However, they could not recover the idol. Contrary, the police seized a number of stolen articles from the dealer. Accordingly, the Latasil police has lodged an FIR at the Bharalumukh police against the proprietor of the scrap dealer.
The police source added that the four accused have been arrested several times earlier for their involvement in various criminal activities.
