SHILLONG, August 3: Victims of various cyber crimes have started to come forward to obtain help from the newly created Police Assistance Cell under the Cyber Crime branch of the Meghalaya police.

Since the creation of this cell, people have reported a number of cases to the cell through phone calls or official complaint.

While the reported cases are mostly related to hacking of the facebook, instagram and email accounts, there are a couple of cases related to fraud and extortions, SSP (CID) Claudia A Lyngwa told The Sentinel.

“Some cases are serious in ture and we have even called the complaint to write an official complaint for further investigation into the cases,” she added.

The victims are usually those individuals who were informed about winning lotteries.

Citing the recent arrest of four fraudsters in Imphal, who were arrested for making fake documents to open bank accounts before selling to unscrupulous people, the SSP said that the absconding kingpin in the case is also wanted in four cases by the Meghalaya Police. He is identified as Thoudam Prasanta Singh and in June this year, Meghalya Police had even gone to Imphal to look out for him. The Police assistance cell that is manned by 24 odd men has come as a boon and is expected to go a long way in busting the slowly increasing cyber crime in the State.
