NEW DELHI: The Janata Dal (United) on Wednesday said that it will register its protest against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and oppose it in their election manifesto scheduled to be released at Patna on April 14.
Janata Dal (United) leader KC Tyagi gave this assurance to a delegation of All Assam Students Union (AASU) leaders in New Delhi. “We will register our protest against the Bill in the party manifesto too. Though we (JD-U and BJP) may be in alliance yet we have a different stand on this issue. The government can’t pass the Bill in the Rajya Sabha without our consent,” said Tyagi.
Days after the BJP in its manifesto said that the party will try to pass the CAB in the Parliament, a two-member AASU delegation including its chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya and its president Dipanka Nath called on Tyagi and sought the support of his party against the Bill. “This Bill is against the people of Assam. We will never allow the government to pass the Bill,” said Bhattacharya.
“We are thankful to Nitish Kumar and the Janata Dal (United) for seriously taking up the issue of Citizenship Bill, and we will continue to stand firm against this contentious Bill,” said Nath.
The proposed Bill seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 for making migrants who are “persecuted” Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for Indian citizenship.
