ROING: Altogether 28 plots of Marijuana spread over approximately 10 acres of land at different locations under Dambuk Circle were destroyed under the guidance and supervision of Deputy Commissioner Mitali Namchoom on Monday. The women SHGs of the area had earlier approached Deputy Commissioner MitaliNamchoom with a plea for the District Administration and Department of Tax, Excise & Narcotics to help curb the growing drug menace, which was destroying the youth of the society. They pleaded for the destruction of the marijuana crops which were planted secretly by farmers all over the Bizari area in the Lower Dibang Valley district.
The DC informed that the Marijuana-destruction exercise was successfully carried out with the active help and support of SHGs — BomiAne, Chiney, Hiney, Agam, Kampona among others. Members of the SHGs also helped in locating the plots, stated the DC.
The law-and-order situation was normal except for a few instances of resistance which were resolved, she said.
The destroyed Marijuana plants were burnt on the spot itself as the team had to walk through densely forested and inaccessible areas to reach the crops planted illegally. "Theis exercise of the district administration is a warning to the villagers not to cultivate such crops," she said, adding that any repeated offenders will be punished as per law.
