BORDUMSA: The 5th edition of the Namdapha Butterfly Meet (NBM) -2022 ended with record of 241 species of butterflies being spotted at Namdapha National Park and Tiger Reserve here on Wednesday morning in Arunachal's Miao.
As many as105 participants, including professional photographers, environmentalists, biologist, naturalist and wildlife experts from Arunachal, Assam, Nagaland, Sikkim, West Bengal, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu attended the meet, which commenced from October 2.
The meet, which was organized by the Society for Education and Environmental Development (SEED), also marked the 68th Wild Life week celebration under the aegis of Namdhapa National Park and Tiger Reserve.
Interestingly, as many as 241 species of butterflies were recorded during the 2022 meet against the 176 species recorded earlier in the area. Chowna Mein, the Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, attended the valedictory function as Chief Guest and also spent a day with the participants.
The patron of the event, Kamlung Mosang, Minister of UD and Housing and Food & Civil Supply, Chau Zingnu Namchoom, MLA of Namsai and State BJP general secretary, were also present during the day long program.
The local MLA Kamlung Mossang, who was the chief patron of the event, said that the preservation of Namdapha and other forests in Arunachal is being accorded priority as the future of the State lies in eco-tourism through community involvement in the sector.
In his speech, Mein said that the Namdapha Butterfly Meet has a huge potential to attract tourists in the State and he would persuade the State Government to make it a calendar event from next year.
Congratulating the organizing committee NBM SEED and Namdapha authority, he assured to extend all support from the Government in the coming days.
In the meantime, Somlung Mossang, the MLA Bordumsa-Diyun, while interacting with The Sentinel, lauded the efforts of the organizing committee for holding the event annually and promoting the cause of tourism. "I regret having missed the event due to some unavoidable reasons," he said.
Minom Pertin, the key person behind the concept who himself has been an ardent environmentalists and butterfly lover said that among others the rare butterfly species recorded during the meet included the Zig-zag Flat, Yellow Veined Lancer, Yellow Spotted Lancer and Koh-i-Noor.
