Itanagar: The joint indefinite hunger strike of the All Arunachal Pradesh Anti Corruption Students Union (AAPACSU), All Yobin Students Union (AYSU) and Yobin Welfare Society (YWS) was called off on Monday following the assurance by Home Minister Bamang Felix to look into their demand.

Felix during the day convened a meeting with the unions’ representatives and urged them to call of the hunger strike.

The organizations were on fast-to-death since November 27 demanding abrogation of rights granted to the non-Arunachalees settled in Vijoynagar, in the panchayat elections.

During the meeting, Felix suggested to the protesters to submit a representation letter to the State Government or the District Election Officer (DEO), Changlang regarding the issue.

Speaking to the reporters, Felix said the process of addition and deletion for the panchayat election is going on. Therefore, the union should write a letter to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO), DEO or the State Election Commission (SEC) regarding the issue, he said while informing that all procedures have set up norms which have to be followed.

“The addition and deletion of voters for the Panchayat election is all upon the concerned department and the state government cannot interfere to it,” the minister said while giving assurance that the government would discuss the matter and accordingly intervene into it.

Felix added that there was no written submission relating to the issue by anyone to him since he assumed as the minister for Panchayati Raj.

AAPACSU president Tana Ganesh Tara said that the union will fight the issue until a logical conclusion is arrived at.

“This is a very old issue and we hope the concerned department and the State Government will bring a complete solution to it,” he said.

Tara added that the issue has been from many years and the union along with the AYSU and Yobin Welfare Society (YWS) has been fighting to resolve the matter.

“Though the home minister has not given any specific time period to solve the issue, we hope the matter would be solved at the earliest,” he added.
