JAGUN: Baikuntha Handique, whose kidnapping created a sensation in Tinsukia district, has been finally released after 22 days in captivity. The victim was kidnapped on February 11 from Wara Ghat in the evening by a group of 10 armed miscreants. According to sources, the stone crusher employee of Jagun was released at Lungbhi village of Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh from where he walked nearly 10 hours to reach the road on Wednesday night.
Handique was an employee at a stone crusher in Jagun owned by one Raju Khan, an established businessman of Digboi.
Earlier, several agitation and demonstrations were also held at Jagun and near Khan’s Digboi-based residence demanding the immediate release of the victim.
The victim who was released after 3 weeks was stated to be physically and mentally sound. After medical examination, the victim was handed over to the legal guardian.
The security agencies are yet to ascertain the identity of the individuals or the organization behind the kidnapping.
However, being an insurgency-hit border location, the area is heavily infested with militancy. The NSCN and ULFA (I) outfits have been active in the belt carrying out various anti-social activities like kidnapping and extortion from the local businessmen.
How was the release of the abducted victim secured is yet to be surfaced? The hefty amount which the kidnappers had earlier demanded against the safe release was actually paid or not is yet to be confirmed. The police investigation was on till the filing of the report.
