ITANAGAR: The Papum Pare district administration has announced cash incentives for people who bring to its attention any illegal activities pertaining to drug peddling, gambling, the illegal sale of liquor, etc. Papum Pare deputy commissioner Cheechung Chukhu announced the incentives in a meeting held to discuss the regulation of markets in the district at Yupia recently. An array of issues, including the late-night opening of shops selling liquor illegally, rampant gambling activities in weekly markets, and illegal activities along the Dikong river banks and railway tracks, were thoroughly discussed. The DC instructed the superintendent of police, additional deputy commissioners, and sub-divisional officers to map out the probable locations where gambling and drug-related activities are likely to be organised so that regular patrolling can be carried out. He suggested seeking the help of student bodies and NGOs to fight the social menaces.

The DC said notices will be issued to owners of the weekly markets to refrain from indulging in any kind of illegal activity, unhygienic garbage disposal, or inadequate revenue payment to the government. Informing about the ‘Know Your Kith and Kin’ initiative by the district administration, Chukhu said that under the initiative, the general public should post about their ward on social media platforms at 10 p.m. every evening to alert and remind parents and guardians to check whether their children and wards are at home or not. The DC expressed hope that the initiative will act as an instrument to prevent young people from being involved in illegal activities such as drug consumption.

Papum Pare (rural) superintendent of police Taru Gusar sought cooperation from the locals in curbing illegal practices. Responding to concern raised by All Papum Pare District Students’ Union president Gollo Lento over the porous border at Gumto, which is a gateway for outsiders without ILP, smuggling of drugs, and ferrying of stolen vehicles, the SP said regular patrolling is being carried out along the railway tracks. He, however, said that the narrowness of the Gumto interstate highway acts as an impediment to strict vehicle checking as it results in huge traffic congestion.

The SP said that modalities are being worked out to ensure strict checking of vehicles. He asked the student leaders and representatives of NGOs to identify doubtful spots along the Dikrong river and railway tracks so that patrolling in these areas can be intensified. SDPO Tago Maga, Trade Development Officer Tai Arun, and Doimukh Bazaar Welfare Committee General Secretary Taha Nega also spoke in the meeting. Among others, Kimin ADC Bekir Nyorak, Balijan ADC in-charge Dr. Marchina Boria, and Doimukh SDO Tana Yaho, EAC (Judicial) Geram Jonkey, deputy superintendent of police (probation) Tum Aje, Doimukh police station officer in charge Inya Ete, and Trade and Commerce inspector Tabia Amko attended the meeting.
