ITANAGAR: Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Mama Natung said that climate change is a reality and hence needed to be contained before the climate crisis engulfs the world.

Natung, who attended the valedictory function of the seventh edition of Northeast Green Summit (NGS) held at North Eastern Police Academy in Shillong today, appealed to the participants in mitigating climate change by adopting a sustainable lifestyle.

Citing examples from the state on the 'Pakke Declaration' for a sustainable lifestyle and also to mitigate climate change, Natung explained how the tribal communities of Arunachal Pradesh are contributing to conserving the environment, wildlife, and forest. He also highlighted the action plans being taken up under the Pakke Declaration in conserving species diversity for human benefit and that of wildlife and the environment.

The three-day event saw deliberations by experts with various fields of expertise on sustainable development catering to the ecological needs of the country, particularly of the northeastern region. The Summit was organized with the theme 'Balancing people, planet, profit: Sustainable NE India and BIMSTEC Region', which started on November 20.

Among others, Board Member of NGS Dr Rajdeep Roy, Arunachal Pradesh PCCF Jitendra Kumar, Kerala Police (IPS) P Vijayan, member of Meghalaya State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission & Advisory Board CP Marak and officers of the North Eastern Police Academy attended the programme.

In the year 2021, the state department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change was felicitated for its 'Airgun Surrender Abhiyan' in the 6th edition of the NGS held at Silchar. The award was presented to Natung in recognition of the efforts of the state government and the department to protect and conserve the rare, unique, and endangered wildlife of the state from being hunted.
